Often times when making upgrades to our hot rods, we forget the importance of a strong, high-performance ignition system. Having one is truly one of the best insurance policies against detonation, misfires, and other ignition gremlins. Upgrading the ignition system in your project car to a race-proven one with components can really prove to be beneficial.
Whether you’re using your project for a street application, or a strip, or even both, anyone can benefit from upgrading these components.
1. if your car isn’t running like it used to, it might be your ignition system
Your spark plug wires might be getting old, building up resistance, and/or experiencing burn-through, or, your coil or module might be ‘on the blink.’ The coil windings could break down, and a module circuit board could have a short in it. The distributor cap and rotor may need to be upgraded as well

2. If you’ve installed a performance camshaft or calibration
You’ll need to upgrade your ignition system in order to take full advantage of the improved air/fuel going into the combustion chamber, Stock ignition systems can’t do the job, as a longer duration spark is needed to ignite the improved air/fuel setup. In addition, if your engine is not computer controlled, the timing curve in your distributor needs to be matched with the power band of your camshaft.
3. If you want to increase the rev range of the engine…
“If you’re hot rod fires over 5,500 rpm, you definitely need to upgrade to a performance style of racing ignition system, Stock ignitions designed for daily drivers cannot keep saturating fast enough to keep up with higher rpm, and this leads to misfires
4. If you want to improve the engine’s efficiency
Performance ignitions allow for wider spark plug gaps (as most do) because of the more intense sparks they produce, to take advantage of the additional spark, open up your plug gaps exposing the larger flame to the combustion chamber – hence more power. Of course, if you don’t put your foot into it, you’ll gain some additional fuel economy, due to the greater efficiency
5. If you want an easy upgrade
“Compared to the vast amount of engine modifications enthusiasts can make, ignition upgrades are pretty easy to perform. Most can be done in an hour, and a lot of them mount in the OEM locations.
