timkins My car has an S-10 steering column with tilt, cruise, wiper, column shift with the emergency flasher button. Periodically it is difficult to turn the key to start the car. Not all of the time but maybe 10-15 per cent of the time. Before I replace the column would a worn key and lock tumbler set cause this kind of problem?

When it is tight, wiggle the shifter, sometimes if there is a mis alignment, it will put pressure on the lock mechanism and make it hard to turn. similar to having your wheels cocked which can put pressure on the same lock pin.

as davy said the neutral safty is in the column shift instead of a switch. next time slip it into neutral and see if it turns.

This is too obvious, but... sometimes when you turn the key off with the wheel turned slightly it will bind the switch. I always think   What the..... and then turn the wheel slightly and it works fine.

I bought a new cylinder and lock set but I tried your suggestion  with the squirt of WD 40 and that is working for now and kept me from tearing the column apart until absolutely a necessity. Thanks to all who responded with suggestions and hints.

You know... WD40 will eventually gum up.  Get some teflon based oil... like BreakFree...  MC

Don is probably right.  Dry lubrication is best since it won't attract gunk.

NO PROBLEM if it only lasts 10-12 years. I'll be dead and gone by then and it will be someone elses problem.
