My car has an S-10 steering column with tilt, cruise, wiper, column shift with the emergency flasher button. Periodically it is difficult to turn the key to start the car. Not all of the time but maybe 10-15 per cent of the time. Before I replace the column would a worn key and lock tumbler set cause this kind of problem?

check the rod between the key nad the switch. they can bind up.
Thats free, the key wont turn sometimes.
When a well used key gets worn enough, it will act like this intermttantly something to check good luck it isn't serious bob s
Had a 72 elcamino that had the same problem.shot wd40 in the key hole and the problem disappeared.

When it is tight, wiggle the shifter, sometimes if there is a mis alignment, it will put pressure on the lock mechanism and make it hard to turn. similar to having your wheels cocked which can put pressure on the same lock pin.
as davy said the neutral safty is in the column shift instead of a switch. next time slip it into neutral and see if it turns.
This is too obvious, but... sometimes when you turn the key off with the wheel turned slightly it will bind the switch. I always think What the..... and then turn the wheel slightly and it works fine.
Iam with woosh...because that happens to me........... even today after all these years. occasionally, Parking and turning your wheels on a hill before reoving the key is a likely situation on this issue .when you come back it may do what your speaking about good luck nothin to serious as i said before hth bob s
well did you get it repaired?

I bought a new cylinder and lock set but I tried your suggestion with the squirt of WD 40 and that is working for now and kept me from tearing the column apart until absolutely a necessity. Thanks to all who responded with suggestions and hints.
kept the elcamino till 84 and never had it happen again.

You know... WD40 will eventually gum up. Get some teflon based oil... like BreakFree... MC
No WD or any oil
GRAPHITE !!!!
Don is probably right. Dry lubrication is best since it won't attract gunk.
too late now. but yeah never use lube on ign . and wd40 ( water displacement test 40 ) is not a good lube .
yea probably give trouble in about 10 to 12 years. what was i thinking???
sam
NO PROBLEM if it only lasts 10-12 years. I'll be dead and gone by then and it will be someone elses problem.
I agree about the graphite. its just that I never seem to have any around when i need it.
sam
Blast it out with electrical contact cleaner... then re-graphite...
