Fat Man raised spindles on Heidts IFS
The front end of my '38 Chevy half ton sits too low after installing a Heidts Mustang II IFS. Heidts told me they have no plans to build raised spindles. Looking for info on marrying Fat Man lower control arms and raised spindles to a Heidts IFS.

  • My initial question was "Will a pair of Fat Man Fabrication raised spindles bolt up to a Heidts Mustang II IFS? Brent said yes, so I bought a pair and had them installed on my '38 Chevy half ton pickup, and I'm very pleased with the results. Don't ask me why I had them powder coated orange; I probably wouldn't have an answer. To solve the fried plug wires problem, I had a set of Taylor wires with ceramic boots installed. I'll run the truck for a while without heat sleeves to see if the ceramic boots alone will keep the wires from frying.

  • I don't know who posted the '37 coupe next to my post but it's not mine. Someone has a good looking coupe!. I've tried to upload a pic of my truck but didn't have much luck.

  • Jim,
I've ordered and received the raised spindles from Fat Man Fabrication. Currently waiting on a shop to schedule me in for the swap. We will determine how much to lower the rear after the raised spindles have been installed. I've also told the shop I want the headers pulled and dimpled so I don't have to periodically change out the fried plug wires. Still debating whether to buy wires with ceramic boots. I understand the ceramic is thin and can crack after a while. Have you had any experience with them?

  • Jim. I discussed the raised spindles with Brent at Fat Man Fabrications and will be ordering a pair soon. Brent indicated they will fit and offered to allow me to return them without a restocking charge if necessary. If we weren't in the middle of Winter, I would drive my truck to North Carolina and let Brent do the front end work. I went and got too old to do much of anything myself, except drive!

  • Thank you, Jim. I enjoyed our talk and certainly appreciated your expert advice. I might try another set of wires with the best heat sleeves I can find before pulling the headers and dimpling them where I have clearance issues. I’ll also try your suggestions on the other issues needing fixes on my truck. Now if Covid 19 and ol’ man Winter will pass us by, you and Rosina can do some more cruizin’.
